Funding Opportunities specific to Mathematics and Statistic students

The Stewart Fund Award for students in Mathematics and Statistics

The Stewart Fund Award supports students in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics by providing funding for various opportunities such as summer research, travel to conferences, outreach activities, and collaboration with faculty members from McMaster University and beyond. This award fund is beneficial for undergraduate students wishing to pursue a research opportunity that is not covered by the NSERC USRA awards.

This award is open to any student in any Mathematics and Statistics program at McMaster, as well as students from other programs who are interested in collaborating with a faculty member from the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Small Awards are valued at up to $500, and Large Awards are valued up to $5000. Generally, the funding is expected to be used in the subsequent summer, although exceptions may occur. Applications that demonstrate matching funds are being provided will be given more favourable consideration than those without.

An application consists of:

  • a description of the proposed project (up to one page), with a timeframe;
  • a budget, specifying how much funding is requested and how it will be spent (e.g. stipend, travel, etc);
  • a cv;
  • an unofficial transcript;
  • a letter of support from a faculty member at McMaster (potential supervisors and projects can be viewed here).If research is to be conducted at another university, there should be a letter of invitation from that university. If a student is registered at another university, there should be a letter of recommendation from that university.

Applications for Small Awards (up to $500) are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year. For Large Awards (up to $5000), there will be a call for proposals during the winter term.

Students are encouraged to consult with the undergraduate advisor Dmitry Pelinovsky or the graduate advisor Ben Bolker for advice on the budget and the feasibility of their project.

All applications should be sent to fogarty@mcmaster.ca with subject line Stewart Award.
