The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University offers a number of opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in mathematical and statistical research.

In a reading courses, students independently learn an advanced topic in mathematics or statistics, normally reading an advanced textbook. To enroll in a reading courses, approach a faculty member to determine if they will be able to supervise your reading project.

Note that students require a GPA of at least 7.0 and the permission of the department, given by the Associate Chair (Undergraduate), to enroll in this course.

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University offers two senior research projects.

Students who take a senior research project work on project in their fourth year over two semesters. Students independently learn an advanced topic in mathematics and statistics, give a presentation on their work, and depending upon their topic, may work on open research problems. To enroll in a senior project, approach a faculty member to determine if they will be able to supervise your reading project.

Note that a senior research project requires registration in Level IV of any Honours Mathematics and Statistics program and a GPA of at least 9.0. In addition, the permission of the department, given by the Associate Chair (Undergraduate), is needed to enroll in this course.

The Student Partners Program (SPP) provides students with paid opportunities to participate as partners with faculty, instructors and staff on projects that contribute to the enhancement of teaching and learning at McMaster. The SPP runs two project cycles a year (fall/winter and summer). Projects supported by the SPP provide opportunities to contribute to activities such as

• Design and development of new courses.
• Creation of resources for faculty and students.
• Collaboration with staff and faculty partners on research projects related to teaching and learning.

The next Project Call will be January 2026, and the next Student Call will be February 2026.

The Susan Cunningham Science Leadership Academy provides meaningful opportunities for students to grow as science leaders and create science leadership community by connecting students of various levels, backgrounds, and stages of their personal and academic development.

The certificate program runs from September – April each year. Students who participate in the certificate program will receive the credential: Science Leadership Certificate of Completion. Applications for the next cohort will open in Spring 2026. Program start date is September 2026 and ends April 2027.

Please note that this is a non-Academic certificate and as such, students are not required to fulfill any specific course admission requirement to apply.

• Students must be a declared Undergraduate (Level II and above) or Graduate student in the Faculty of Science.
• Students will be encouraged to consider enrollment in an academic course related to leadership (eg. courses available through the Wilson College Minor in Leadership and Civic Studies)
