Dear Students and Faculty,   

I am thrilled to welcome you to the Faculty of Science’s Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) at McMaster University. Innovative original research is the back-bone of science; The process through which new knowledge is created, translated and disseminated to the world at large. With this as a guiding principle, we recognize that it is incumbent upon us a faculty to provided opportunities for an immersive research experience for all of our undergraduate students, especially those who may not fully recognize the impact that independent research and scientific literacy has on all of our lives. With this office, we embrace our mission of fostering excellence in undergraduate research opportunities and experiences across all science disciplines.    

At the OUR, we are committed to providing you with equitable access to research opportunities, comprehensive training, and seamless integration with career planning across all four years of your undergraduate education . We believe that by offering targeted events, funding support, mentorship, and centralized resources, we can help increase your research exposure, enhance your skills, and ensure a full and rewarding student experience.   

Our goal is to cultivate equity, awareness, and accessibility to research opportunities, enabling every student to participate in transformative experiences. By consolidating information and coordinating resources in one place, we aim to facilitate your research journey and empower you to unlock your full potential.

The Mission of the Office of Undergraduate Research

The mission of the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) in the Faculty of Science will be to promote excellence in undergraduate student, and faculty-led, collaborative research and scholarship in all disciplines. The Office will provide equitable access to undergraduate research opportunities, facilitate training on all aspects of the research process – from conceptualization and literature searches to science communication, coordinated integration with career planning, and ensure excellence in student experience and success.

The Office of Undergraduate Research will provide the opportunity for undergraduate students to:

  • EXPLORE research on campus and within our community to understand the scientific process
  • ENGAGE in the research process in a variety of forums and formats while developing their academic and professional skills
  • ELEVATE their aspirations and outcomes through coordinated opportunities for science communication and engagement

Outcomes and activities of the OUR will include:

  • Increase research exposure, cultivate interest and enhance research skills through targeted events and learning opportunities
  • Increase research opportunities by providing funding support to student researchers and faculty mentors, and coordination and enhancement of existing undergraduate research awards
  • Provide resources and support the undergraduate student research journey through mentorship opportunities and student advising
  • Increase equity, awareness and accessibility to research opportunities by consolidating and coordinating research related information in one place
